USNS Hiddensee Photo Tour

Built in the 1980s at Saint Petersburg, Soviet Union, the USNS HIDDENSEE is a TARANTUL I - class corvette which initially served in the East German Navy as RUDOLF EGELHOFER. After Germany's reunification, the ship was renamed HIDDENSEE (P 6166) but only saw short service and was decommissioned in April 1991. In 1992, the HIDDENSEE along with 170 SS-N-2 guided missiles was transferred to the US Navy for tests. Manned by a civilian crew (mainly consisting of her former East German crew), the ship operated as USNS HIDDENSEE in the Chesapeake Bay. Stricken in April 1996, the HIDDENSEE was donated to Battleship Cove in June 1997. The photos below were taken by me on August 21, 2010, during a visit to the USNS HIDDENSEE museum at Battleship Cove, Mass.
