USS Davis (DD 937)

USS DAVIS was a FORREST SHERMAN - class destroyer. She was the fourth ship in the Navy to bear the name, however, the first ship named in honor of George Fleming Davis. In the mid-1960s, USS DAVIS was one of the eight FORREST SHERMAN - class destroyers chosen to receive an anti-submarine warfare capability upgrade which included the replacement of one of the Mk-42 5-inch guns with a Mk-16 ASROC missile launcher. The ships that underwent the conversion then formed the BARRY - class.

Decommissioned on December 20, 1982, and stricken from the Navy list on July 27, 1990, the DAVIS was sold for scrapping on June 30, 1994.

About the Ship's Name:

George Fleming Davis born 23 March 1911 in Manila, Philippine Islands, graduated from the Naval Academy 31 May 1934. He was on board OKLAHOMA (BB 37) when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and served in HONOLULU (CL 48) from 1942 to 1944, earning the Legion of Merit for his services as Damage Control Officer. He was given command of WALKE (DD 723) and died on board her 6 January 1945 as a result of a Japanese suicide plane attack. For his fearlessness in directing the destruction of four attacking kamikazes and his refusal to leave the bridge despite serious injuries until the safety of his ship was assured, Commander Davis was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
